With your moving blankets, cover any fragile items and fill in loose gaps in the moving truck that could cause your items to shift around. Plastic wrap or stretch wrap may also be wrapped around corners and edges to protect items. 

Choosing the right type of equipment is an essential part of conducting an efficient move. Depending on the size of your move, dollies and hand trucks are often necessary to safely transport items and load a moving truck. 

Disassemble Your Furniture

Whether you’re preparing for a last-minute move or big apartment move, certain precautions should be met to ensure the safety of your fish and fish tank.

Moving a fish tank can result in a total disaster if not done properly, so we’ve compiled a step-by-step guide on how to move a fish tank with ease.

Take a look below at the quickest and safest method on how to move a fish tank.

Step 1: Gather supplies in advance.

Your first plan of action is to gather the right supplies for moving a fish tank. A variety of necessary items are listed below:

• A siphon hose for draining the fish tank
• A fish net for safely catching and transporting your fish out of the tank
• Containers for transporting your fish (plastic fish bags for small fish or short moves, 5-gallon buckets for large fish or long-distance moves)
• Rubber bands or twist ties and packing tape for tying up your plastic bags and sealing your bucket lids and moving boxes
• Packing supplies, such as packing paper and bubble wrap, for protecting your fish tank and all of its equipment and accessories
• Moving blankets for providing a thick layer of support over the fish tank 
• Moving boxes for storing and protecting the fish tank and other items during the move

Step 2: Prepare your fish before the move.

After you’ve gathered all of the necessary supplies, the next step is to prepare your fish before your move.

You should stop feeding your fish 24-48 hours before moving day. This gives them ample time to digest their food and pass waste before you take them out of their comfort zone (fish can survive for a week without food, so don’t worry!).

Transport your fish with the original water from the fish tank so they don’t experience shock. Begin by draining some of the water from the tank with your siphon hose. Pour it into your plastic bags or large buckets until they are roughly two-thirds full, leaving enough space on top to prevent water from overflowing.

Now, carefully remove your fish from the tank using your fishnet and place them into your containers of choice. Make sure the plastic lids on your 5-gallon buckets are secure by sealing them with packing tape or duct tape. If you’re using plastic bags, then simply tie them up with rubber bands while ensuring there is enough room for air. For anything more than a short drive, at least half the bag should be air.

Remember, in an enclosed bag, the only source of oxygen is what is in the bag. If carbon dioxide levels get too high, it can interfere with oxygen absorption by the fish’s gills. Take care. For longer trips, you may need to use compressed oxygen. Oxygen for fish transport is available for rental or purchase, and is usually controlled with a hose and valve into the bags or buckets.

Step 3: Prepare the fish tank before the move.

Once your fish are properly accounted for, it’s important to pack up the interior of the fish tank.

Start by draining the rest of the tank water into 5-gallon buckets with your siphon hose. You can pour this water back into the tank once you’re settled into your new home, reducing stress for the fish. We recommend storing any live plants in the buckets and submerging in the water during your move. This helps their survival and makes them less likely to dry out by the end of your move.

Next, remove any decorations from the aquarium, such as rocks, pirate ships, shells, rock castles, and artificial plants. Carefully dry and wrap them with packing paper, and then bubble wrap. Afterward, place them into a small to medium moving box with an appropriate label. 

Remove the fish tank equipment and accessories as well, including the aquarium hood,  heaters, chillers, lighting, pumps, and filters. Place these items into a moving box after properly drying and wrapping them. 

In order to prevent cracking or shattering, it’s vital to reduce the weight of the fish tank by removing any sand or gravel. Transfer these particles into an empty bucket for safekeeping, which can later be used to refill the tank once you’re finished moving. Finally, wipe down and dry the tank completely. 

Step 4: Pack the fish tank.

The last step of the preparation process is to pack the fish tank. 

Once you’ve made sure that the tank is completely empty and dry, start packing the glass tank in packing paper, and then in bubble wrap. As an extra layer of protection, wrap a couple of moving blankets around the tank and tape them in place.

After the fish tank is properly secured, carefully place it into a large moving box. Make sure that there are no loose gaps for the tank to wiggle. Then, tape the box shut and appropriately label it “FRAGILE and HEAVY tank” for easy recognition from you or your movers during the move.

Step 5: Transport your fish and fish tank.

On moving day, you’ll want to ensure that your fish and fish tank are transported in a safe manner. 

If there’s enough space in your vehicle to safely fit your fish and fish tank, then a safe bet is to transport them yourself. Make sure they are placed tightly among other boxes to prevent constant shifting during the ride to your new home. In addition, you should keep them in an enclosed cargo space (not a pickup truck) for protection against external conditions.

Begin pouring the old water into the fish tank and fill it halfway. Then, use the fishnet to catch all of your fish and gently release them into the tank. Fill in the rest of the tank with any remaining old water. If you have run out of it, use dechlorinated tap water instead. 

Afterward, plug in the pumps, heaters, and filters. You should leave the light on for several hours, allowing your fish to get acclimated to their new aquatic home. Finally, cover the fish tank with its hood and let your fish rest at last.

Tips Before Packing Your Artwork

Gather supplies. Before you begin packing your artwork, you’ll want to make sure that you have access to the right materials. Artwork is fragile and easily susceptible to breaking, so an abundant supply of padding is needed. Necessary supplies include the following:

• Moving boxes of various size
• Bubble wrap
• Painter’s or masking tape
• Packing material (e.g. cardboard paper or glassine paper)
• Markers

While you can use newspapers or packing peanuts as alternative packing material, they carry a risk of ruining your precious artwork. Newspapers can stain your fine art with ink and peanuts can stick like glue or cause a styrofoam mess. Instead, it’s best to use heavy-duty material, such as cardboard paper and moving blankets, for vital protection.

Use secure moving boxes. You’ll need a fresh supply of sturdy moving boxes to protect your valuable items when moving. If you don’t have any boxes around your house, it’s easy to get free moving boxes at various places.

If the moving boxes you find for free aren’t durable enough, we recommend investing in sturdy, high quality moving boxes at your local supply store. You want to ensure that your artwork fits snugly, so look for moving boxes of appropriate size for each framed art and glass piece you own. When determining the right size moving box, it’s important to account for the bubble wrap and packing material that will take up extra space inside.

Drive the right vehicle. You can follow the steps on packing artwork perfectly, but it just takes one mishap on the road to damage or destroy your valuable artwork. For example, delicate artwork laying in the back of a pickup truck is highly susceptible to bumpy roads and intense weather conditions. On the other hand, cargo vans and box trucks with an enclosed cargo space help safeguard your artwork from external elements.

Of course, you should take into consideration other items that must be transported if you’re preparing for a big move. Plan accordingly and determine how big of a moving truck or van you need before packing.

How to Safely Pack Artwork – Paintings, Framed Art and Prints

Step 1: Artwork with a glass pane should be handled with care. With your painter’s or masking tape, mark an X across the glass and continue taping the edge of the glass near the frame. This tape will ensure that if the glass does break, it won’t shatter completely and damage your art. If you don’t own art with a glass pane, then you can skip this step.

Step 2: Use a clean piece of cardboard paper to cover the frame of your glass-covered art. Alternatively, you can use glassine paper on artwork that doesn’t contain glass, like a canvas painting. As an extra protective measure, it’s advisable to place cardboard on the corners of the frame as well.

Step 3: Wrap your artwork with substantial amounts of bubble wrap. It’s essential to ensure that your artwork is padded and not exposed, so don’t hesitate to layer additional bubble wrap throughout the frame. After sufficient wrapping, seal the bubble wrap with tape.

Step 4: Once your artwork is wrapped and secure, carefully place it into the moving box and ensure that it fits tightly without large gaps. Be extra careful. If necessary, fill in the gaps of your moving box with extra pieces of cardboard. After taping up the moving box, write a clear “FRAGILE” warning on each side of the box to let you and your movers know that it should be handled with care.

How to Move Large Items with a Pickup Truck

Check the weather

Because pickup trucks have open beds, it is important to check the weather before you schedule your move. A rain shower, while you are on your road, will soak and damage your items.

Covering sensitive items with plastic tarps is not suggested. Tarps can slip and blow backward as you drive down the road. Plus, they don’t protect from water pooling in the truck bed. 

Understand your payload capacity

Your pickup truck’s payload capacity is the amount of weight that can be carried in the cabin and truck bed. Anything in your truck, including cargo and passengers, counts toward the total payload. 

Most household items, including furniture, will not exceed the maximum payload of a standard pickup truck. Take care with heavy items, including cement pieces, construction supplies, farm supplies, and other large loads that may exceed the limits. Never overload your truck as this can endanger passengers and cause mechanical damage to the vehicle.

Use moving blankets

Protect furniture and other items with padded moving blankets prior to strapping them down. If you don’t have a moving blanket, use an old quilt, comforter, or towels. 

It’s important to put this layer of protection on before tying down items, to prevent the straps from scratching or denting the item.

Securely strap your items down

Secure your item in place using high-quality ratchet straps. For large items, use multiple ratchet straps to secure the item in place. Make sure your ratchet straps are securely connected to the bullrings or tie-down anchors in your truck bed. 

If you are moving boxes, firewood, or other stacked items, a cargo net may also serve to secure the load.

Do not rely on bungee cords. Bungee cords stretch, allowing the item to move and slide when you are in motion. This could cause damage to the goods you are moving. 

Check your tie down

Don’t forget to tug on your straps to ensure the item is secure. Your cargo should not be able to slide or move around. If anything feels insecure, take the time to re-secure it prior to getting on the road.
