Since its formation in 1990, BIA Cares has raised more than $2 million for local charities. Recently, BIA Cares donated $15,000 in scholarships to local students and $20,000 to the Alpha Project through the adoption of its Community Room at Alpha Square in East Village, a mixed-use, low-income housing development.

A vast array of home items will be available for sale, such as sofas, coffee tables, bedroom furniture, dining room tables and chairs, occasional chairs, lamps, bedding, patio furniture and artwork. Items offered were donated by local home builders and interior design companies, including Pacific Coast Communities, Shea Homes, Designed Squares Interiors, Cornerstone Communities, With-In Design, Travis Adams of San Alstros Lemon Grove LLC, Blackbird Interiors and Pardee Homes. The 10,000-square foot showroom space in Mission Valley, where the fundraiser is being held, is owned by BIA member, owner and developer of commercial and residential properties, H.G. Fenton Company, who is donating use of the space free of charge.

“We are pleased to provide BIA Cares with a space to host this incredible event,” said Mike Neal, president and CEO of H.G. Fenton. “H.G. Fenton Company recognizes how much of an impact the money raised has on our kids and community, and we are happy to support such a cause.”

Those attending the model home furniture sale should come prepared to load and strap down furniture in their vehicle. Austin Hill competed in the NASCAR season opener last Friday in the # 02 GoShare Chevrolet Silverado at Daytona International Speedway and had a good race, finishing in P11 out of 32 . The next NASCAR Truck Series race will take place on February 24th at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Last week’s Daytona winner Austin Dillon will be behind the wheel of the No. 20 GoShare Chevrolet Silverado looking to get his 2nd win in a row!  Austin’s win at Daytona was even more special as he was driving Dale Earnhardt’s #3 car on the 20 year anniversary of Earnhardt’s win at the same Daytona track.

The following benefits describe our experience at EvoNexus and may not apply to other incubators. I suggest researching all of the available startup incubators and find one that is a great fit for your company.

1. Mentors and Advisors
One of the primary benefits to joining a startup incubator is having access to a team of mentors and advisors. I am quite sure that we wouldn’t have reached the modest level of success that we have enjoyed without the group of mentors and advisors that EvoNexus provided. I would like to take a moment to thank Josh Komenda, Gerry Widmer, Austin Neudecker, Adam Riggs-Zeigen, and all of the EvoNexus mentors and staff for their guidance during GoShare’s infancy! These C level executives took time every week out of their busy schedules to review our progress, strategies, tactics and provide critical feedback. Having a strong group of leaders who have already survived the startup phase to bounce ideas off of has proven to be a great learning experience that I will always be grateful for.

2. Free Office Space
Not having to pay rent is an obvious benefit for any startup company trying to bootstrap. However, the fact that the office space is free is not the only value. The office set up is bright and open which provides for a lot of collaboration within our team and with other companies in the incubator. In my experience, these open environments correlate with startup success. The office also comes with some great amenities including a full kitchen with a Kegerator, endless cups of coffee, pool table, ping pong table, and of course foosball. This work-hard/play-hard culture makes going to work 10-12 hours a day a lot more enjoyable.

3. Founder Meetings
One of the most valuable parts of the incubator has been the opportunity to learn from my peers who are in the exact same position that we are in. Twice a month a group of CEO’s get together in a round table format to talk about: a win, a loss, and an ask. An open forum gives this group of really smart people a chance to put their heads together and solve real business problems that are typical across most young organizations. I love the meeting format of celebrating a small win, talking about a loss, and asking your peers for help. It gives everyone at the table a chance to get some value out of the meeting.

4. New Customers
Being in a startup incubator can prove to be a great testing ground for new products. GoShare focuses on moving and delivering for businesses and we were able to find at least a dozen customers from within EvoNexus who were kind enough to test our product in real life and give us candid feedback. The constructive criticism forced us to think from our customers perspective and make product and operational improvements before we started to increase our marketing efforts. Big thanks to everyone that tested GoShare in spite of the low quality of our MVP :). The patronage is reciprocal at EvoNexus meaning that we are also a customer of some very cool Evo companies. Halograph for example, provides GoShare with cutting edge fraud protection software that has helped us minimize losses by blocking users with a high risk of fraud using AI and machine learning. LeadCrunch uses artificial intelligence to supply our sales team with high quality sales leads (including decision maker and their contact info)! When we needed to transcribe videos for our website we used Rev for super fast and low cost transcription services. These are just a few examples of the B2B support that startups at Evo provide each-other. When we look back in a few years I think this may prove to be the greatest value to our business in the long run.

5. Bonus Perks
There are so many unknown costs when you start a company. It seems like everyday there is a new expense that needs to be accounted for. Luckily being a member of EvoNexus’s startup incubator has some additional perks in the form of discounted software and services that are vital to most tech startups. A great example is the $15,000 AWS credit which covers all of our server costs for the next few years. Our server costs are relatively low but saving a few hundred bucks a month is a big deal when your are bootstrapin! Another company that offers a substantial discount to Evo co’s is Hubspot which can be helpful for getting your inbound marketing efforts off the ground. Not to mention the free beer.

Craig: Load it, strap it down, and deliver it.

LA Resident: I think it would be a great option for people.

Craig: The app is called GoShare, and it just launched in L.A. The standard delivery rate: 99 cents per minute.

Andrew: A lot of ours has been furniture store fronts, all the way through to estate sales, all the way to lumber and hauling dirt.

Craig: Here’s how it works. Shop at a store like Landon Cole Furniture. Tell GoShare where you want to go. Snap a picture of what you want to move, and enter how much you think it weighs. Pick a truck, van, or SUV and pick a delivery date and time or ASAP.

Shaun: We can usually get a driver there within 30 to 45 minutes.

Craig: All GoShare drivers are insured.

Shaun: We have supplemental insurance on top of that to protect all the items that we’re carrying for customers.

Craig: And all go through background checks.

Shaun: National check, local check, driving history check, and we do terrorist watch list and sex offender watch list as well.

Craig: Hundreds of drivers have already signed up.

Laura: This really ends opening up a whole market of people to be able to drive and be able to contribute to the economy.

Andrew: It’s a couple extra bucks you’re getting. Drivers get a good bang for their buck, and I think the customer does too, so it works really well on both sides.

Shaun Savage faced a classic square-peg-in-a-round-hole dilemma: trying to bring a big screen television from Costco into his Mazda 6 sports sedan. The TV wouldn’t fit. His dilemma resulted in a 30-minute drive to pick up a moving truck, taking the TV home and another 30-minute drive back to reclaim his vehicle. It also eventually resulted in the sale of his biggest asset — his condo — to finance the formation of his own company — GoShare.

GoShare is a mobile application and website that connects consumers who need to move, haul, tow, ship or deliver large items over short distances with drivers who have a pickup truck, van or SUV. His background is in sales and business development, but Savage took a risk by starting the company, something his friend, a poker player, equates to gambling. “It’s funny because I never thought of it this way but he was like, ‘Wait a minute, you risked everything that you have financially and career wise to start your company,” said Savage, 32. “Playing poker is kind of the same thing. Yeah, I’m risking my money, but in poker there’s part gambling and part strategy. And that’s how business is, as well. If you were to ask, do you gamble? I would say, no. But in fact, I do. I just don’t do it in a casino. I do it in an office.”

Focusing the Vision
Forming the company in 2014, Savage called it GoShare to encompass all he wants to achieve: becoming the Kayak, a mobile travel app, for the sharing economy and allowing people to get a ride, truck, boat or place to stay all in the same place. “It would be a place where people can come and share assets, whatever it was,” Savage said. “So that was the original idea.” After hearing that investors thought the idea was too broad, Savage chose to start with the one thing no one else was doing at the time: sharing trucks and vans. Launched in May 2015 with an app and a website, GoShare’s eight employees, including Savage, operate out of both San Diego at EvoNexus and New Jersey, where Savage is from, with the hope of eventually expanding internationally. A new version of the app comes out this week for iOS and the Android version comes out in about another week. Over 8,000 people visit the website and download the app each month and the company receives a couple jobs a day, Savage said. There are currently 80-100 active drivers for GoShare and 2,000 applications from all over the U.S. from interested drivers. All drivers go through a local vehicle inspection and a thorough background check. The service works much like a ride sharing app in that the consumer starts by placing a pickup address, drop-off location and type of vehicle. Then the customer adds a backup vehicle, whether they need a trailer, and a weight and photo of the item they want to move. Then the app/website will provide the customer with an estimate, whether for immediate or future pickup.

The Split
The pricing for GoShare is determined by the driver’s time and the size of the vehicle. A standard truck costs 99 cents a minute with a minimum of $29.99, and a cargo van costs $1.29 a minute with a minimum of $34.99. Comparatively, a U-Haul gives rates on its website of $19.95 plus 59 cents a mile for a truck or van and $19.95 plus 79 cents a mile for a 10-foot truck. GoShare drivers keep 80 percent of the profit; GoShare keeps the remainder. An average order is $70-$75. Savage would not reveal revenue or customer numbers because of the competition in the market. GoShare pays a premium monthly for cargo insurance for each active driver on the platform and truck insurance is paid by the drivers. Truck rentals make up an $18 billion industry, according to the research firm IBIS World Inc. The most common service is moving furniture, but GoShare drivers also have moved items for customers cleaning storage facilities, hauling industrial equipment or pallets, making donations to Goodwill, small offices and small apartments, last-minute-deliveries to warehouses and pickups from Home Depot or Lowe’s for construction supplies. The company is actively fundraising and has been self-funded up to this point. Its first investor was a customer. GoShare won $5,000 in prize money for winning PitchTech 2015 in June at Interactive Day San Diego. One of the drivers, Sonny Levoit, 39, found GoShare’s ad on Craigslist and was assigned the area from La Jolla to San Ysidro and east to Santee. He averaged 4-5 jobs this past month, but usually does 10-12. He said so far the experience has been positive. He’s been working with Savage since the company launched. “A lot of the more unique jobs I can take because I have a trailer,” Levoit said. “I really appreciate what he’s [Savage’s] done as a business…I moved 17 times before I got out of high school. Having a truck all my life, it’s always like ‘you got a truck?’ Most of the time I just didn’t get paid for it.” Savage said success for his company starts with a great customer experience. While he still plans to become the Kayak of the sharing economy, he also is interested in producing an autonomous vehicle to reduce pollution and benefit society. “I would like to build a self-driving electric pickup truck,” Savage said. “That is the ambitious goal. I think that would be a total game changer.”

2. TV Debut – They say that any press is good press and so far that has been true for us. Our first TV interview on CW 6 with in San Diego with Derek Staahl was very cool. GoShare was chosen as part of a mini series on San Diego startups and it was flattering to say the least. We had a lot of fun filming the segment at Discount Furniture Showroom, an early customer of ours. It would be the first but not the last time GoShare was on broadcast TV this year. 3. EvoNexus – About a year ago we made a decision that it was in our best interest to join a startup incubator. If you are not familiar with incubators I recommend watching the show Silicon Valley on HBO for a humorous look into startup life at an incubator. EvoNexus is the premier startup incubator in Southern California with offices in San Diego, La Jolla, and Irvine. EvoNexus companies have gone on to raise more than $700 million in funding and outcomes. The application process was long and arduous. The competition was stiff with less than 10% of companies being accepted. After our first application was rejected in Sept. 2014 we were discouraged but decided to continue building our business. We reapplied in the spring and we were able to impress the committee enough to earn us a coveted spot in Cohort 16. The timing was great as we were launching our beta version at the same time. The incubator provided us a great environment to work in as well as a team of mentors, advisers, and entrepreneurs to guide us. Thanks Evo!

4. Winning Pitch Tech – In June of this year we entered our 2nd startup competition at Interactive Day San Diego. 100’s of companies applied and 10 were selected to pitch in front of three investors and an audience of about 100 marketers. The competition included several of our fellow EvoNexus companies and a few more promising startups from around San Diego. Going against the advice of our advisers we decided to play a video of the GoShare experience in the background during my 4 minute pitch instead of the traditional slide deck. The 3 investors chose us and Wrapify as their two favorites and we were given the opportunity to pitch in front of the entire conference of about 1,000 people.  The audience was able to vote for their favorite using their smartphones. 5. Launch – It’s hard to put into words the challenges of launching a software company that was build from scratch but I will try to briefly explain. Managing the development process from concept to a fully functioning product is a long and frustrating journey that involves sleepless nights, mundane testing, and annoying bugs. After almost a years worth of work our engineering team was able to launch our MVP (minimum viable product) in the form of an iOS app and responsive website. The day that our app was approved by Apple was a joyous one even though the first version was pretty bad. The customer app worked well but the driver app did not. It took us a few months before we were able to get the apps and website to function properly. Watching our team work together to solve problems and create a new product that our customers love is probably the single greatest achievement of the year. This hard work has paid off in the form of more than 100 jobs created for our drivers, engineers, and salespeople. We have also been able to help hundreds of people and businesses when they needed a friend with a truck. Now it’s time to share our product/service with the world and help more people move, haul, and deliver large items on demand.
