IN-SOURCED DELIVERY TRUCKS

If you’d like to keep all of your company’s operations in-house, you can always buy company trucks/vans and hire delivery drivers. Keeping delivery operations in-house ensures better quality control and customer service, however it tends to be expensive, as well as, potentially less efficient if you don’t have sufficient resources to keep up with demand.

THIRD-PARTY MAIL DELIVERY COMPANIES (3PL)

Most businesses are using third-party logistics companies like DHL, FedEx, UPS, and USPS to deliver their products to their customers. It’s usually much more time and cost efficient than insourcing delivery, which makes it a better choice for most businesses, especially smaller ones. By using third-party logistics companies for delivery, businesses don’t have to worry about specializing in delivery, paying for warehouses, etc.

CROWD-SOURCED DELIVERY

The sharing economy is growing quickly in many different sectors, including the delivery sector. Companies like GoShare are making it easier for businesses to keep up with consumer demands. Currently, Amazon is making the a lot of progress in developing drone delivery. They’re calling the service Prime Air and claiming that customers can get their products (under 5 lbs.) delivered in less than 30 minutes from the time they order it. Amazon hasn’t released a launch date for this service, but customers seem eager to try it out.

AUTONOMOUS GROUND VEHICLES (AGV)

AGVs are basically lockers on wheels. They would deliver items without human involvement, aside from a central human supervisor. Although, these wouldn’t be as fast as drones because they would travel by ground, customers could be notified of the exact time their item would be delivered. The downside of this method is that the receiver of the package would most likely have to be home to be able to get their package out of the locker. DHL and Google are both working on developing self-driving delivery trucks to improve last mile delivery, although Google won the patent for it, titled “autonomous delivery platform”.

DROIDS

Droids are autonomous vehicles that are fairly small (not much bigger than a regular sized package). They are similar to the AGVs in the sense that they are like lockers on wheels. They would travel on the sidewalk, although relatively slow, primarily to help out with last-mile delivery or food delivery. Because they’re so small, they likely wouldn’t be able to carry a significant number of packages each trip. As of last July (2016), a company called Starship Technologies, based out of Estonia, began implementing droid delivery in Europe. They started out with a select few food companies to test it out and are now partnering with grocery stores and more restaurants.

These futuristic delivery methods sound awesome, but it may be awhile till they’re fully developed into plausible methods, and even then, they might be very costly or too risky. With that said, it doesn’t mean that you have to continue with your old delivery methods. 2. Be unique
Amazon is a leader of e-commerce and they seem to sell everything. A jack of all trades but a master of none. If you see your business as unique and niche, you can use that to differentiate from Amazon and any other retailers. You should ask yourself, “What are our strengths, what unique value proposition do we offer to our customers, and why should they buy from us instead of Amazon?” You can compete with Amazon and any other competitors if you focus on what makes you great and different.

3. Take advantage of in-person customer experience
You should create a truly amazing experience for your customers by providing a personal touch that can’t be done online. When customers visit your stores you can provide them with one-on-one service in person. This is incredibly powerful, especially if you have a strong sales team in your stores. Use that one-on-one time to learn about what the customer’s needs are and build trust. Customers care about the price, the quality of the products, and the way you make them feel when they are shopping. If you create an amazing shopping and delivery experience your customers will keep coming back for more.

4. Ensure customers come back for more
You might think your job is done after your customers buy a product from your business. If you think this way, you are making a huge mistake. Even after they complete their purchase, they keep researching to see if their purchase was the right decision or if there was a better option than they chose. They may also need other products that you sell. Furthermore, it is much cheaper to retain existing customers than to find new ones. In order to make them come back you can offer a subscription service, a rewards program, send follow up emails, and retarget website visitors using ads on Facebook and Google. 1. Clean Up Your Truck
No one wants to hire a truck driver with a beat up looking truck. If you pull up to a job with the bumper hanging off your vehicle and it squeaks when it comes to a stop, you’re going to have unhappy customers. So the first thing you want to do is take your truck to a shop and make sure it’s in proper working order. Make sure you keep the outside of the truck and the bed of your truck clean and clutter free at all times to make a great first impression.

2. Buy The Right Equipment
Having the right equipment will make your business more efficient and save your back from the pain of picking up.  The type of equipment that you need will depend in part on the types of items that you will be delivering for your customers. If you are mostly delivering furniture and helping people with moves you will need cargo straps, blankets, and rope to make sure the items are protected and delivered in the same condition you received them. A dolly can be useful for courier services where you will likely deliver boxes on a regular basis. You can buy a standard dolly for about $20 at Home Depot, or Lowes. If you are transporting furniture you should get a furniture dolly and if you plan to deliver appliances you should buy an appliance dolly.

3. Name Your Business
Naming your trucking business is one of the most rewarding parts of creating your own business because the name you come up with is representative of your business values and mission. Before you decide on a name, make sure the name is not already taken by another business.  You can check if the name is available by contacting your local Secretary of State (if you want to open your business in California, then you need to contact the California Secretary of State). If your first choice for a name is already in use, don’t be discouraged. This is a chance for you to take your time, get creative, and come up with a unique name. You should also check sites like GoDaddy to make sure you can get the domain name of the business that you want. If the .com is not available try buying the .co version of your domain such as www.goshare.co. After you name your business you will need to set up a legal entity. If you are the sole owner of the business a Sole Proprietorship may be best. If you have business partners an LLC (limited liability corporation) may be a better fit. LegalZoom is a good resource for finding out if your business name is taken and registering your business entity with the state. We are not a legal or accounting firm. You should consult with an attorney and an accountant before making these important decisions.

4. Insure Your Business
Business owners should always consider the appropriate type of insurance to protect your business in case of an accident. In the trucking business, you will need insurance for your vehicle, cargo insurance and possibly liability insurance as well. Having an insurance policy is also essential for building trust with customers. Many businesses and individuals will avoid working with a trucking company that is not properly insured. Contact a local commercial insurance broker to find out how much it will cost to insure your business. This cost may vary based on location, types of deliveries you make, and the perceived risk.

5. Marketing Your Trucking Business

Now that you have your vehicle, equipment, and a name for your trucking service, it’s time to start marketing.  You can first communicate with your friends and family using your social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. You should create a business page on each of these social media properties. Most trucking businesses will need to market to other businesses who are looking for a truck to help with deliveries and moves. This can be done by making a list of businesses that may need a delivery service and then cold calling and emailing prospects to let them know about your new service. Online marketing and advertising can also be a low cost and effective way to target business owners. Google Adwords and Facebook both have easy to use self-serve marketing platforms. You can target customers based on keywords they search for or their interests/demographics/location.  Craigslist can be a great resource to post free ads to let people know about your local delivery business.

6. Save Your Receipts
As a small business owner, tracking your expenses is very important. Some expenses related to operating your trucking business may be used as a tax write off. This can include things like: gas, equipment and your mobile phone (We are not accountants and this may not be true in all cases. Check with your accountant for details). Using an app like Expsensify is easy and useful for keeping track of your receipts and expenses. You should also keep track of the miles you drive as this can be used as a tax write off as well in some cases. MileIQ is a good tool for tracking your mileage.

Jim Patton: Need help moving a heavy item fast?

Neda Iranpour: A San Diego startup trying to revolutionize the truck rental business Uber-style. San Diego Six’s Derek Staahl joining us live in studio to explain GoShare.

Derek Staahl: Yeah, the idea is to help people haul, move and deliver and help drivers make some money as well. It’s the second in our series on San Diego Startups. By now most of us are familiar with Uber and Lyft, but what about those times you really need a pickup truck and some help lifting?

Shaun Savage: A lot of customers have used it for buying furniture off of Craigslist, second-hand furniture off of a third party.

Derek: Shaun Savage founded GoShare. They just launched their iPhone app two months ago.

Shaun: I started thinking about the different problems that I’ve had in my life, and one of them was that I needed a truck a couple of times a year but I have a car. I would always have to go and rent one, and I saw the success that other sharing or economy companies were having and I thought that why not take the same principles and apply it to the truck rental business.

Derek: Savage showed us how it works.

Shaun: Step one you just set the pickup address of where you want the item picked up from. Then we just ask you to take a picture.

Derek: You tell GoShare where you are heading and how big of a truck, van or SUV you need and the software will give you a quote. The price depends on how long the job takes. Ninety-nine cents a minute from the minute the drive picks up your stuff until the minute they drop it off. There’s a twenty-five dollar minimum. The company says a typical job costs about forty to fifty bucks.

Shaun: I think people were doing this type of work already before GoShare came about, but now they can do it in a safe way. We handle all the payments for them so there’s no exchange of cash between the customer and the driver. It’s also safer for the consumer because we do background checks on all the drivers, we do vehicle inspections for all the drivers.

Derek: Drivers earn eighty percent of the total job and they can be booked on the spot or scheduled in advance.

Shaun: Hit book now and it will send the request to the driver.

Derek: The company plans to launch an Android app soon and eventually start hauling, moving and delivering in other cities. Right now the company operates in San Diego and the owner’s hometown of New Jersey. Craig: Founder Shaun Savage says each driver goes through a tough security check.
Shaun: Interview meeting first and then we do a vehicle inspection to make sure that their vehicle’s in good working condition. Then we do a national background check.
Craig: As for your stuff, consider it covered.
Shaun: We carry a cargo insurance policy so it protects all of our customer’s items that we’re carrying for them.
Craig: After you’ve downloaded the app, enter the pick up and drop off spots…
Shaun: Select the type of vehicle that you want, pickup truck or a cargo van, you can also request a trailer.
Craig: …you’ll get an estimated price.
Shaun: If you’re comfortable with the price estimate we just ask that you take a picture of the item.
Craig: You can pick a time and date or enter ASAP if you need a driver now. Then pay online and track your delivery.
Sonny: We’ve gone to furniture stores and picked up a load without the customer even being there and bring it to their house.
