Top Tips for Moving Heavy Pieces of Furniture
Always Measure First
Prior to lifting a finger, measure any doorways or tight hallways you may need to pass through when moving furniture.
If you are furniture shopping, we recommend measuring prior to making a purchase. Jot some notes down before you go and keep them in your pocket or on your phone to reference when you are looking at new pieces.
Struggling to push or fit an item through an opening that is too small can result in damage to the item. It may also lead you to drop the item, potentially injuring yourself or your moving partner.
Clear Your Pathway
When you are lifting and carrying large pieces of furniture, it is unlikely you will be able to clearly see your feet. So, before you start moving your item, clear any debris or tripping hazards out of the way.
If you are worried about scuffing up or damaging a floor, lay down a liner. This could be a roll-out plastic liner or a few moving blankets. Make sure to wear closed-toed shoes with non-slip soles.
Remove Extra Pieces
Remove loose items that could fall during lifting, such as couch pillows. Keep them in a safe place so you can set them out again once the item is moved.
To reduce the weight of your load, don’t forget to empty shelves and drawers. This means emptying books off shelves and clothing from dresser drawers.
Disassemble Large Items
If any item can be disassembled into smaller pieces, do so. Save the screws, nuts, and bolts separately. We suggest a plastic bag. These screws and bolts can be difficult to replace, so be sure to keep track of the bag or container you place them in.
Ask a Friend to Help
If you can not safely and comfortably lift an object on your own, ask a friend to assist you with your move. One good guideline is one person for every 50 pounds. If a friend is not an option, consider hiring professional movers.
GoShare allows you to hire one or two background checked, insured local professionals. They are available for same-day projects. Learn more here.
Lift with Your Knees and Hips
Improper lifting can put a strain on your back and cause injuries. Lift from your legs and hips when moving heavy items. Never bend at the waist and lift items with your back.
Use the Right Equipment
Using a dolly or moving straps can save you time, reduce potential strain and the risk or injury, and prevent accidental dropping or damage.
Make sure to pick the right equipment for the job. Check out our posts here to learn about different dolly types. Or, see our page here to see a general recommendation for moving day equipment.
Try the Sliding Technique
If the item is too heavy for you to carry, and you do not have a dolly on hand, you may also try the sliding technique. This works best on smooth floors, including wood or linoleum.
Simply place the item on furniture sliders or a moving blanket. Gently lift the edge of the blanket and slide your item across the floor. If you are using sliders, slowing push the item forward. Select a spot to push on the lower half of the item, to avoid tipping.
Use the High-Low Lifting Method
The high-low lifting method requires two people. Tilt the furniture back so that one mover is carrying the top of the item. The second mover should stay low and carry the bottom of the item.
Maintain the angle as you move. This angle will make it easier to navigate staircases and corners.
