1. Choose The Right Vehicle

To start your courier service you will need a reliable source of transportation to deliver packages. Many full-time couriers choose cargo vans for this type of delivery service as they provide the largest amount or cargo space to transport the items that you are carrying for customers. 

If you don’t know much about buying a cargo van you can read some reviews for the 2020 models here. If you want to lower your monthly payments we suggest trying to lease a van or you can shop for a used cargo van. Alternatively, a pickup truck with a covered bed can also be a good option.

2. Buy The Right Equipment

Having the right equipment will make your courier delivery business more efficient and save your back from the pain of carrying boxes. The type of equipment that you need will depend in part on the types of items that you will pick up and deliver for your customers.  

If you are mostly delivering parcels or boxes a simple dolly or hand truck is essential. You can buy a standard dolly for about $20 at major retailers like Home Depot, Lowes, or Target or you can buy moving equipment online here and have it delivered through Amazon.  Other items you may need include cargo straps, moving blankets, and tape.

3. Name Your Business

The name you come up with is representative of your business values and mission. Before you decide on a name make sure you check with the secretary of state in the place that you want to do business to make sure the name is not already taken by another business. You should also check sites like GoDaddy to make sure you can get the domain name of the business that you want. 

After you name your business you will need to set up a legal entity. If you are the sole owner of the business a Sole Proprietorship may be best. If you have business partners an LLC (limited liability corporation) may be a better fit. LegalZoom is a good resource for finding out if your business name is taken and registering your business entity with the state.

4. Insure Your Business

Your courier company will need business insurance for your vehicle, cargo insurance, and possibly liability insurance as well. Having an insurance policy is also essential for building trust with customers. Many businesses and individuals will avoid working with a courier service that is not properly insured. 

Contact a local commercial insurance broker to find out how much it will cost to insure your business. This cost may vary based on location, types of deliveries you make, and the perceived risk.

5. Marketing Your Courier Services

Now that you have your vehicle, equipment, and a name for your courier service, it’s time to start marketing. You can first communicate to your friends and family to start off using your social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. You should create a business page on each of these social media properties.

Most courier businesses will need to market to other businesses who are looking for a courier. This can be done by making a list of businesses that may need a courier service and then cold calling and emailing prospects, or drop off your business cards. 

Online marketing and advertising can also be a low cost and effective way to target business owners. Google Adwords and Facebook both have easy to use self serve platforms. You can target customers based on keywords they search for or their interests/demographics/location.

“My experience with GoShare has been positive. I’ve used them a handful of times and each experience has been good. For example, a dining set for 6, awkwardly packed, a patio set bought on Craig’s List, furniture purchased at an estate sale…. Things that I couldn’t remotely get in my car, nor manage without muscled and creative loading help. The challenge for me is estimating the vehicle-size needed, and the weights of items. But shortly after entering the parameters on the app, the driver calls and there’s opportunity to explain what’s needed. The drivers are friendly and helpful. I suggest good communication to calculate cost to minimize unpleasant surprises. Keep in mind the calculated cost, is still an estimate. I further suggest ensuring the driver knows pick-up details and delivery requirements. They are not professional movers just like Uber/Lyft drivers are not professional drivers. It’s unfair to equate GoShare to Professional movers. If cost is a concern, I suggest comparison shopping before the delivery is required. Compare competitor cost, and lead time. I have hired movers for small jobs and those that will take small jobs, may charge a fee for showing up before the work is started, or have a minimum cost. The GoShare drivers have carried items in to where I wanted them. I’m unsure if this is their practice or if I got lucky. Again, it’s good to indicate your expectations to anyone who moves your things. I suggest you plan to either help the drivers load/unload at both ends or tell them in advance if multiple people will be needed to lift and load items in and out of a truck bed, or if a dolly would be helpful. It’s often not the weight but the awkwardness of things. Hiring movers or renting a truck for a single purchase/item can be expensive and a hassle. Go Share is convenient, reliably available, doesn’t hassle your friends who happen to own trucks, and cost-effective in my experience even after a gratuity. I would not consider GoShare for a big job, although maybe. But for those pallets of impulse purchases at Costco or Home Depot, or that unplanned purchase at an auction… I would, and have, recommended GoShare to others who like me, wish we had access to trucks a few times a year.”

-The first time I was going to buy this couch… .. just happen to be the day Big Lots had sent out a message to the stores that they no longer had a delivery service… that they had just fired the existing company and were trying to find a replacement.  Hearing how bad their old service had been when I came back a second time to buy the couch I was considering not using the new service “goshare” but instead rent a pickup truck from uhaul & do it myself.  But I’m glad that I did.  So this is my first time using your/this type of independent contracted out type of service.  Since the Sales Representative at Big Lots was familiar with your site she went on my phone & entered the necessary information in seconds.  I bought the couch at 1pm and I hesitated at her putting 2pm as a pick up time.  But she said there were drivers in our local area & whoever finished their current delivery first would let me know that it had been assigned & keep me informed as to the status of my pickup through the phone application.  She said I should hear within 15 minutes to half hour that my request had been assigned & give names of drivers.
So I was a little surprised when I didn’t hear anything that first hour, the second hour   LOL…. but it all worked out.  The driver apologized for the misunderstanding.  And explained that he was coming from San Diego & what would be a good delivery time…. I told him there was no reason for him to spend an hour or more sitting on the freeway in stop and go 5pm traffic on a Friday night.  I appreciated that he was flexible so it worked out for both of us that I could run my errands and he would come up from San Diego later that evening after traffic had died down.  It worked out great!  I was very happy with the service and driver.  After he was done getting everything into the house, before leaving he was kind enough to ask if I would like assistance in removing the cardboard & plastic covering from the furniture.  five stars!  Thanx Again.

“An ‘Uber for furniture/big stuff deliveries’. I was thrilled when I found this on the App Store, and had the occasion to put the service to the test when I found my dream sectional on Craigslist. I set up my account on my phone while sitting in my car, which consists of putting in your pick up address, drop off address, name, phone, email and credit card number. You then select the size vehicle you need (it gives you a cost per minute for each vehicle type), and allows you to pick a backup vehicle type if the first type isn’t available. The app setup took all of five minutes it was so easy and streamlined. The sectional I bought was in the driveway of someone’s house and they weren’t even home, but the driver (Thomas), picked up the sectional and brought it to my house about 8 miles away without any problems. He was friendly, quick and professional, and I couldn’t have been happier. And the cost was on the nose what I was expecting to pay. Austin Hill competed in the NASCAR season opener last Friday in the # 02 GoShare Chevrolet Silverado at Daytona International Speedway and had a good race, finishing in P11 out of 32 . The next NASCAR Truck Series race will take place on February 24th at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Last week’s Daytona winner Austin Dillon will be behind the wheel of the No. 20 GoShare Chevrolet Silverado looking to get his 2nd win in a row!  Austin’s win at Daytona was even more special as he was driving Dale Earnhardt’s #3 car on the 20 year anniversary of Earnhardt’s win at the same Daytona track.

GMC Sierra 1500. If you are looking for a full-size truck, GMC Sierra 1500 model is one of the best pickup trucks available! The Sierra is a tough overall truck offering four engine options including a V6 engine with the mild hybrid powertrain as well as the two available V8 engines which are are less fuel-efficient. The 2018 Sierra 1500 gets 18 city/24 highway fuel economy with the V6 that puts out 285 horsepower.  The V8 version makes 355 horsepower and gets 16 city/23 highway MPG. Sierra offers great towing capacity that is up to 12,500 lbs. The price for this particular model ranges from minimum $29,000 to maximum $41,495. Sierra’s  0 – 60 time is 6.6 seconds. Furthermore, Sierra also has quiet and classy higher trims with spacious seating especially in the crew cab version. The technology is top notch including compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2018 Ford F150. This F150 model is the best selling truck every year for a good reason. The F-150 has one of the best payload capabilities up to 3,270 lbs as well as one of the greatest towing capacity up to 13,200 lbs. The 2018 model is 700 lbs lighter than the previous generation making it more fuel efficient. The horsepower ‎on the V8 engine is up to 395 hp, fuel economy is a respectable 20 city/26 highway and towing capacity 5,000 to 8,000 lbs.  The truck is fast with a 0-60 time of just 5.9 seconds. Ford F-150 newest model also has trailer backup assist help you maneuver better when hauling or towing as well as extremely spacious seating. The price ranges from a minimum of $27,380 to maximum $63,945. The F150 capable technology package including compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2018 Chevrolet Silverado. One of our favorite pickup trucks for 2018 is the Chevy Silverado. If you need heavy duty truck to transport cargo the fully equipped Silverado has the towing capacity of 12,500 lbs. The new Silverado 1500 also has a maximum payload up to 2,250 pounds. The Silverado 1500 offers three engine choices ranging from  285 to 420 HP.  Fuel efficiency isn’t the best offering 18 city / 24 highway and a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds. The price of the Silverado ranges from $28,285 to $49,390. The powerful 6.2L V8 engine is a beast when it comes to towing. The eight-speed transmission option is preferred for towing over the standard six-speed. Additionally, the 2018 Silverado provides a well appointed cabin as well as comfortable and supportive seats with outstanding maneuverability and off-road performance. There is also a great deal of technology available for drivers to use including lane keep assisting and forward collision warning. The truck is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Fidencio: Hi my names Fidencio. I’m from Texas originally, I moved out here for a job opportunity and that kind of fell through, so I found GoShare online and I checked it out. I was like I have a truck might as well join with them and use my resources. GoShare came along through a sponsored post on Facebook, and I accepted it, and went through the process, and it was pretty easy.

GoShare: Why did you join GoShare?

Fidencio: With this it gives me the opportunity; it gives me time and money, exactly what I wanted. Time to work whenever I wanted to work and money that can help me live, but also it gives me the time so I can do other things that I actually enjoy.

GoShare: What are your interests and hobbies?

Fidencio: I love my truck, I love going on road trips and things like that. We have an 80 acre ranch back in Texas, so I’m use to moving things around, and I don’t like being inside of an office. I don’t like sitting behind a computer 24 hours a day, or 9:00-5:00. I like going out and meeting people, and just doing things, and helping people when I can. That’s why I really enjoy GoShare.

GoShare: Why do you think customers use GoShare?

Fidencio: Yesterday there was a job that one of the drivers wasn’t very comfortable with the move. I went and took the job. I went over there and it was a 2,000 pound pallet of paper, a box of paper up to 2,000 pounds, and know that my truck holds 3,200 pounds so I said put it on there. We put it in there and I strapped it down correctly and I made the trip and got it accomplished.

GoShare: Any other memorable moments since driving?

Fidencio: At the end of the job I got like $100 tip. It was a three story, you have to go three stories rolling the boxes up the stairs and down the hallways, a small little apartment too, but at the end she gave us a $100 tip. It was late at night too, so if it’s late at night and it’s like you’re about to go bed, or anything like that go out and do that last run. You never know what could happen.
