What do you like about being a delivery professional?

Mike:

I just really enjoy being on the road in general and working with people and making deliveries. Los Angeles is a big place and a great way to explore it is to make deliveries all over Metro Los Angeles, all over California. I’ve been around the United States quite a bit making deliveries and I love to see the country and it’s great to make some money while I’m at it.

Shaun Savage:

For someone who likes to be on the road and travel and meet people, yeah, this is a great opportunity. What would you tell someone who is thinking about working with Go Share?

Mike:

Just make sure that this is actually what you would like to be doing and it’s not going to be a surprise when you have to be there on time and it’s taking something heavy upstairs.

Yeah, that’s great advice. Thank you. Yeah, punctuality is obviously super important. This type of work is not for everybody per se, but it can be really enjoyable for the right people and I think it’s important that you enjoy what you do. It makes the days go by a lot faster and smoother. Any memorable GoShare experiences or customers that are worth mentioning?

Mike:

Long distance jobs. Going up to San Francisco, delivering some telescope equipment was nice. Moving pallets. Sound to San Diego is nice. I like those long distance jobs, but the local ones are fine too, of course.

Shaun Savage:

Yeah, I would say there’s a pretty good mix, especially in California of local short distance last mile work and plus some more long distance regional runs, so yeah. It’s good that you’ve had experience with both. You’ve had enough experience on your belt using the app and interacting with customers and things like that. What are some areas where you think GoShare can improve to make it better for delivery professionals like yourself and others?

Mike:

One feature that I’d like to see would be to be able to change your live location. For example, if I have a job taking me down to San Diego and I’m already in San Diego and then I’m getting offers for a job starting right now back in Los Angeles, well, I can’t accept them because I’m not there, but if I could change my location, hang out in San Diego for a couple hours and see if I hit anything before I come back up to la, that would be nice.

Shaun Savage:

If you know you’re heading to San Diego using that as an example, feel free to reach out to our customer support team. They can at least temporarily turn you on in those markets so that over the course of your drive time, if there’s anything new that comes in, you will know about it. I see.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van offers extended cargo space and many versatile combinations. Choose from 21 different variations of the cargo van model. The Sprinter can tow up to 5,000 pounds and has the highest payload capacity in its class.  

The Sprinter also offers the longest list of active safety features and driver aids in the category. These include Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Parking Assist with a rearview camera, Active Lane-Keeping, Active Distance Assist, and Active Braking Assist. Stability and control is enhanced through Downhill Speed Regulation and Crosswind Assist, along with Trailer Stability Assist in situations where a trailer is attached to the van. 

With all it has to offer, expect the Sprinter to come in with a higher price tag than near competitors. 

2021 Ram ProMaster 

The Ram ProMaster offers a high payload capacity and plenty of body configurations. But, it still falls behind the full-size van offerings from competitors Ford and Mercedes-Benz when it comes to towing capacity and safety features. 

The Ram ProMaster offers low and high roof variations, as well as wheelbase options of 118, 136, and 159 inches. However, competitors offer similar options with more powerful powertrains. The ProMaster lags in towing capacity and does not offer all-wheel drive options, coming only with front-wheel drive. 

The 2020 Ram ProMaster’s safety features were scant. However, the 2021 model expands these offerings to include forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, automated braking, and cross-wind assistance.

The ProMaster’s 9.2 inch digital rear mirror is optional but a handy upgrade, especially for models equipped without rear windows.  

2021 Chevrolet Express

The Chevrolet Express doesn’t offer many bells and whistles. But, it’s still a versatile, dependable workhorse and a staple in many fleets across the country. 

The Express offers three different powertrain options, including a diesel, as well as a range of payload and towing capacities. It comes with standard and long-wheelbase alternatives. Unlike competitors, the Express does not offer a high-roof option.

The Express sets itself apart with a strong engine and high maximum payloads. It’s ideal for towing and hauling heavy loads. Expect it to handle like the large vehicle it is, not quite as responsive and smooth as competitive options. 

The interior is simple and spartan, making this truly a no-frills option. In fact, though the Express first hit the market in 1996, it is still in its first generation. This dated look is evident in the vehicle design. 

2021 Nissan NV Cargo

The 2021 Nissan NV Cargo van uses a strong body-on-frame design, similar to the Chevrolet Express. This strengthens its payload and towing capacities, but at the sacrifice of driver comfort. Look to the Transit or Sprinter for a smoother ride and easier handling.

Vehicle options include a V-6 or V-8 engine. The NV Cargo comes exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. 

Like Nissan trucks, Nissan Cargo Vans have simple, basic, low-tech interiors. However, the 2021 model did add an in-dash navigation system on the SV and SL trims. 

The 2021 NV will be Nissan’s last run before phasing out the vehicle in North American markets.

Vehicle Type

GoShare has projects for a wide variety of vehicles, from passenger cars to trucks and cargo vans. See our vehicle types below to learn more about the projects you will be eligible for:

Sedan

Any vehicle that doesn’t fit into one of the other categories below is considered a sedan vehicle on our platform. Sedans are eligible to deliver small parcels, packages, and documents. Drivers of sedans may also act as a helper on a project that requires multiple delivery pros. As a helper, they will assist with loading and unloading. They will not carry cargo. Projects intended for trucks and cargo vans are generally too large for sedans.

SUVs

The SUV vehicle type includes larger vehicles that are not a full sized truck or cargo van. This includes vehicles such as SUVS, minivans, and compact cargo vans. These vehicles are eligible to deliver larger parcels and packages. Drivers of the SUV vehicle type may also act as a helper on a project that requires multiple delivery pros. As a helper, they will assist with loading and unloading. They will not carry cargo. Unfortunately, we don’t currently have an option for SUVs + trailers.

Pickup Trucks

Vehicles with a cargo bed qualify as pickup trucks on the GoShare platform. Some examples of pickup trucks include the Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, and Honda Ridgeline. California pickup owners click here for additional requirements.

Cargo Vans

Full-size cargo vans are dedicated moving and delivery vehicles with no passenger seats behind the driver cab. Minivans, SUVs, passenger vans, and compact cargo vans do not have enough cargo space to accept GoShare cargo van projects. Compact cargo vans that do not qualify for the “Cargo Van” classification may include but are not limited to:

• Ford Transit Connect
• Nissan NV200 Compact Cargo
• Ram ProMaster City
• Mercedes-Benz Metris
• Chevy City Express

If you drive one of the vehicles mentioned above, you may still sign up to work for GoShare. You will be able to accept SUV projects and assist as a loading/unloading helper on 2 person projects. Cargo van owners in California, click here for additional requirements.

Box Trucks

GoShare accepts a range of box trucks on the platform, commonly between 12 and 26 feet. Tractor-trailers are not currently accepted on the platform. If you have a box truck that is less than 12 ft, you may sign up under the Cargo Van vehicle type. Box truck owners in California, click here for additional requirements.

Vehicle Restrictions

Read below to learn if there are any restrictions that might prevent you from joining the GoShare platform.

After-Market Accessories

Most after-market accessories will not disqualify your vehicle from the GoShare platform. However, if modifications to your vehicle impact cargo space or shorten bed-length, you may be asked to reclassify your account to that of a sedan or SUV.

If you have a hard cap installed on your pickup truck, you may still sign up for the GoShare platform. Please read project descriptions carefully and do not accept any projects that would not fit in your truck bed.

Vehicle Age

Vehicles must be no more than 22 years old. In 2025 that means the vehicle must be model year 2003 or newer. This is an insurance requirement and we are not able to make exceptions, even for excellently maintained vehicles.

Rentals

GoShare allows rental cargo vans and box trucks on its platform if the rental agreement is for a period of at least 30 days. If your rental period is for 30 days or more, then you can sign up with that vehicle.

Salvage Titles

Unfortunately, GoShare is not able to accept any vehicle with a rebuilt or salvage title.

Vehicle Verification

Whether you are signing up as a driver or a helper, your vehicle must still be verified in order to get your account activated on the GoShare platform. You will be asked to provide clear images of the front, back, and sides of the vehicle. You must also provide proof of insurance and registration.

Registration and Insurance

The vehicle should be registered and insured within the state you wish to accept projects in. This documentation will be verified during your sign up process. If the vehicle is registered under another name, you may still use it with permission from the owner. Our driver onboarding team may request a letter from the owner verifying that you have their permission to use the vehicle on GoShare’s platform.

While there is no perfect model for hauling cargo, your full size van needs to fit your needs. Consider the following when looking for a turbo diesel engine versus a gas engine:

It Depends on The Model

What are the advantages and disadvantages to the models you are considering? While gas and diesel are important factors, each car manufacturer produces different vehicles based on consumers’ desires and needs. Whereas a 2020 Ford Transit and the 2020 Mercedes Benz cargo vans have both diesel and gasoline cargo van options, the 2020 Dodge Ram Promaster only takes unleaded gasoline.

For example, the 2020 Mercedes Benz cargo models come with the option to purchase a V4 or V6 engine. Its standard gasoline 144” wheelbase on a 2500 with a V4 engine costs $35,720 and can tow up to 4,420lbs, whereas the diesel 144” standard 4500 model can carry up to 6,768lbs with a V6 engine costing $47,370.

However, when you opt for a higher roof on a Benz, the cost does go up and you lose out on the amount of weight you get to carry. Just as a comparison, the 2500 model on an extended 170” wheelbase only comes in a diesel engine, but the maximum payload is 3,649lbs, a sharp contrast to 4,420lbs.

On the other hand, the 2020 Ford Transit, known for its strong power stroke, showcases a 3.5L PFDi V6 Engine with a 8670 GVWR payload package. Depending on what you want out of your truck, you may choose one option over another.

The Type of Activity Counts

What type of cargo are you hauling? How much engine power do you need? In general, diesel-powered engines fare better on highways in comparison to their gas counterparts. Diesel motors work with more power and thus, are more compatible with larger loads and driving longer distances.

However, if you’ll be driving on the streets in the city most of the time, a gasoline cargo van will fare better. City driving on a diesel engine will only incur your costs.

Gas Prices Are A Factor

On average, you’ll get more fuel savings from a gas-powered vehicle versus a diesel van. Diesel will cost you a pretty penny, averaging around $2.43 a gallon as of August 2020, in comparison to $2.18 for gasoline according to the US Energy Information Administration. Depending on your budget and what you’re looking to spend on a daily basis in your tank, you may opt for a gasoline-powered machine rather than a diesel-powered engine.

However diesel fuel, on average, gives you better fuel economy. If gas mileage is high on your priority list, then diesel may be the better option. Keep in mind that, if you do want diesel fuel, it can be hard to find gas stations that carry it. If you opt to choose a van with diesel, plan accordingly.

Maintenance Costs

In general, it’s less expensive to maintain a gas van than a diesel one. Although diesel wins when it comes to engine power and mileage, it will cost more in the long-run. With the lack of labor and availability of parts, you’re bound to spend more cash on repairs. While gasoline engines take less time and labor to maintain, it may not be worth it for your van.

Depending on the factors above, your needs for a diesel cargo van or a gas cargo van may be different from someone else. Thus, it’s not a matter of the diesel or gas being “better” than another option. Each person driving the van has different needs, so there is no right or wrong answer.

In the end, do all of your research before buying your vehicle, and make sure you weigh out all the options before making a final decision.

The full-size cargo van segment is highly competitive, with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz and Ram making strides in their respective Sprinter and ProMaster models. For 2020, you will find an array of new features in the Ford Transit, ranging from revamped powertrains and drive configurations to innovative tech and safety advancements. 

Let’s take a deeper look at how Ford is leading the cargo van pack thanks to its Ford Transit 2020 updates.

Performance – Powertrains

The latest Ford Transit model comes equipped with a new base engine – a 3.5-liter PFDI V6 engine with 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, improving upon the efficacy of the former 3.7-liter V6.

Ford introduced a new turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel inline-four engine as well, replacing the 3.2-liter diesel inline-five from previous models. This new engine consists of 210 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, an upgrade from the five’s 185 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

The 2020 Ford Transit still maintains the high-performing 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which produces an outstanding 310 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. It also gains stop-start technology for greater fuel efficiency.

Last but not least, the 6-speed transmission is a thing of the past, which is now replaced with an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission for improved performance and enhanced acceleration.

Ride and Handling – All-Wheel Drive

The only full-size van to offer an AWD/4WD system is the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, until now. The long awaited feature for an all-wheel drive configuration in the 2020 Ford Transit has arrived, and it comes with innovative design that makes for a smoother ride on the road. 

The Transit’s AWD system is rear-biased, but it’s capable of sending 100% of its torque to the front wheels when needed. Also, the AWD model maintains the same ride height as the standard rear-wheel drive model. Different traction modes can be deployed on its front and rear wheels, allowing the Transit to handle a variety of muddy, rutty, and slippery conditions.

Interior and Exterior – Designs and Configurations

In terms of the Transit’s exterior look, several new grille and headlight designs are available. Interior-wise, new colors and surfaces, improved grab handles, and swiveling driver and passenger seats have also been added. 

Among the Transit’s various configurations (cargo, passenger, chassis-cab, and cut-away), a new crew van configuration has been introduced. The crew van is a unique combination of the passenger and cargo van, offering a second row of seating with a maximum seating capacity up to five, and providing enough cargo space in the back to fit many hot shot loads.

Tech – Equipment and Accessories

On the tech front, the Ford Transit 2020 upgrades are enticing with a much more modern feel than its predecessors. The van now has power-sliding door capabilities, along with standard Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices.

The Transit’s dashboard is entirely revamped, with the option for installing a 4-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. This display screen holds Ford SYNC technology, meaning every Transit has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And, there is new logistics technology in the form of an innovative fleet management software. This software fills in the need for businesses and managers to monitor their vehicles’ locations, fuel usage, driver behavior, and more.

Tech – Safety

The Ford Transit 2020 model presents a number of safety advancements to make driving much more reliable on the road. Some driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, collision mitigation, post collision braking, and automatic high beams. The Ford Co-Pilot360 Technologies also offers front and rear split-view cameras, blind spot coverage, trailer coverage, cross traffic alerts, and adaptive cruise control for slow traffic conditions. 

Verdict

The Ford Transit 2020 updates are refreshing to see, putting the van ahead of its competitors in terms of the sheer amount of additional features included in this model year. Ford’s latest Transit model is packed with all-new powertrains, configurations, and tech advancements that currently make it the best-selling van and one of the top vehicles to own in the market today. As Ford continues to be a manufacturing leader in creativity and innovation, it will be interesting to see what its future within the full-size van segment holds.
